Skoove is one of the big names in piano learning, but we weren't as impressed with it as many of the other apps in our list.

While it has all the features you'd expect, it doesn't excel in any particular area, and we also found the interface a little lacking when compared to its rivals.

The beginner course brings together a lot of different concepts into a basic series of lessons. While this aims to give you a broad knowledge of piano as quickly as possible, the flipside is that it feels incredibly scattershot, so you don't get change to ease into any particular concept. While there are some excellent backing tracks on here, and the audio sounds fantastic, we took issue with the way you read the music on screen. It simply runs from left to right, emulating the experience of reading sheet music, and that means you don't know what's coming up when you reach the end of the stave.

Realistic, perhaps, but we prefer the scrolling display seen in other apps. The company has just launched its Android-friendly app, which you can test out for free for a limited time.

A relative newcomer to the world of online piano lessons, Tonebase is pitched at advanced players who want to improve their skills. It has lessons available for both guitar and piano, which are delivered through a series of videos and textbooks.

The latter are surprisingly useful resources, while the videos are not quite as clear as a beginner may need. In addition to pre-recorded videos, you can also watch and participate in live lessons and workshops. Our testing process for online piano lessons started with evaluating how easily each product can be purchased, downloaded and installed.

Once the software was downloaded on our testing computer, we looked for all available features and took note of how easy it was to switch between lessons and songs. After we were comfortable navigating the software or app, we started taking beginner lessons. Although we did take note of the advanced features on each platform, we mostly approached the courses as if we were complete novices to the instrument.

We also tested how easy it was to use a MIDI keyboard when the software allowed for that. This varies, but most of the online piano courses we reviewed require a monthly, semi-annual, annual or lifetime subscription.

That said, even the most expensive online piano lessons are cheaper than face-to-face instruction, and you can take them at your own pace and in the comfort of your home. If you're looking for a much cheaper alternative, then you might find some handy beginner courses on the best online learning platforms. In our experience, musical lessons on these platforms aren't quite as thorough as the options above, but if you've already got a subscription to something like Skillshare then it could be a good place to start.

You may also be able to find some one-on-one help via the best online tutoring services , as platforms like Wyzant now have teachers across a broad range of disciplines. The main benefit of online lessons is that you can go at your own pace. Of course, there are some drawbacks, too.

Because of this, online lessons are usually best suited to beginners, who want to get a grasp of the instrument. The best online piano software allows you to use a MIDI-compatible keyboard to track your progress in real time while you take lessons.

The software can identify the specific notes you missed so that you can go back and practice the areas that are giving you the most trouble. So much better than simply piano.

And guess what people NO adds!!!! And only a few songs in the library cost money the lessons don't and it helps its motivation too!!

I try setting up a profile for her and it tells me to "check my internet connection" while i am sitting at Home ON WiFi. Her tablet isn't on a mobile network plan, but i dont see how that should matter when i am on my home wifi.

I took some piano lessons as a kid and played for a few years. But I was never excited nor did I practice much. Forward 35 years in the midst of Covid 19 , I had an intense desire to play the piano. And I had the time to learn and practice! I purchased an electric piano online and downloaded Simply Piano. I realized as I went though lessons that I was relearning everything.

And they do such a nice job of keeping me engaged. I was enjoying it! So much that I started to look forward to learning new lessons, which opened up more music to practice and etc. As much as I love classical music, learning and practicing modern songs that I quite well has been really fun. They will not be completely free of beating especially the thirds , but the beating should be relatively constant as you move up and down the piano in small steps.

If you notice any notes that sound off during this process, you can adjust them by ear, tuning one string first, and then the other two strings to the first. Some notes could have returned to being out of tune due to your hammer technique, or there could be imperfections in the tuning produced by Entropy. At this point you should be able to tell whether your tuning made an improvement or not.

Hopefully it did! As mentioned earlier, piano strings tend to go back to how they were if proper hammer technique is not used. This is something that will take practice. It is a good idea to check your tuning after a day or two to see if any of the strings have gone flat again, to get feedback on how well you are using the tuning hammer, and to correct any needed notes. Question 1 year ago on Step 5. Is it possible that some keys can't be recordered the last 3 keys? The software just doesn't recognise it. Answer 1 year ago. Last three keys are not that critical. They don't even score us on those during the RPT exam. Just do those by ear. This is quite a complecated guide to tune a piano at the same time not everyone has the capability to do this I suggest just to have a piano tuner to tune your piano.

I did mine using this guide 2 months ago and it still sounds good. I am a piano tuner, and I have to at least mention that beginners should only try on old pianos they don't care about destroying.

Reply 3 years ago. I think destroying is a bit of a strong word. I would think the worst that could happen is breaking a string or stripping a pin. Being out of tune is a temporary and fixable condition. But I would agree that beginners may not want to start on a really nice piano. If you have any suggestions on how to properly set the notes beyond my basic explanation, I would welcome improving the article. I am a piano technician, but I only tune aurally. Since you seem to have success in tuning your own piano, you might wonder why some of us keep advising against DIY tuning.

Our career is to take good care of these instruments, experience matters and the range of knowledge is more than a DIY guide. You welcome suggestions on setting pins, I don't even know where to start because there are many aspects to consider.

Hammer technique and stability setting pins require a lot of practice ideally with feedback from mentors. Technicians spend years tuning hundreds and thousands of piano to obtain these skills, so it is really hard to imagine tuning a piano with just a short guide. It is certain that, beginner tuning would not hold tuning for long. Depending on how one uses the tuning lever, one might strip the pins rapidly, or damage the pinblock.
