Expressive arts therapy program
The Expressive Arts Therapy EXA concentration in counseling psychology prepares students for practicing the art and science of expressive arts therapy through a curriculum rooted in contemporary, creative, competency-based adult learning approaches. Students attend a week-long residential seminar at the beginning of each semester. The seminar is held in the San Francisco Bay Area. Immersive, arts-based residential seminars begin each semester where students complete up to one-third of semester coursework.
Teaching methodologies promoting the scholar-artist-practitioner model through integration of theory into "real world" reflective practice that incorporates social justice. Faculty skilled in arts-based face-to-face, virtual, and online approaches to teaching and learning. Students, faculty, and advisers come together in our residential seminars to engage in extensive experiential intermodal arts-based learning, completing up to a third of the coursework for the semester in person with the remaining coursework delivered in combined asynchronous, and occasional virtual synchronous learning formats to support students' clinical skill development.
Students engage in three years of online asynchronous, and virtual synchronous learning with study during residential intensives at the start of each semester in the SF Bay Area. In the second year, students are encouraged to engage in action learning, integrating theory and expressive arts into practice through volunteering or incorporating basic learning principles into their current work.

Expressive Arts Therapy blends a passion for art with the skills of counseling. Graduates meet the Art Therapy Credentials Board requirements to pursue art therapy registration. In addition, graduates can also qualify to pursue registration as an expressive arts therapist through the International Expressive Arts Therapy Association www. Students can seek art therapy licensure in some states and must verify that their degree program covers the necessary requirements of the licensing board in their state.
Students engage in study of the history, ethics, and practice of art therapy and expressive arts therapy. Art therapy is an integrative mental health and human services profession that enriches the lives of individuals, families, and communities through active art-making, creative process, applied psychological theory, and human experience within a psychotherapeutic relationship. AATA Creative interventions allow children and families to actively imagine, experiment with, reframe and rehearse desired changes through self-expression; in this course you will learn a wide variety ways to facilitate trauma-informed, creative interventions and learn more about the foundations of these approaches.
Body-Based Approaches and Expressive Arts Therapy -- Focusing on the physical practices of yoga, this course will bring to light the "how" and "why" utilizing a body-based method is important when addressing trauma. One will both learn and experience these concepts though a variety of articles, films, and research, all provided within this course.
Yoga is presented as a body-based approach to building resilience and self-regulation with consideration for trauma-informed methods of counseling and expressive arts therapy. This course designed to help you understand and learn more about how expressive arts therapy approaches and methods complement and enhance psychotherapy and counseling. This course emphasizes 1 what is self-regulation and why is it key to trauma-informed intervention 2 current knowledge about self-regulation and stress reduction in psychotherapy and counseling; 3 the neurobiology of self-regulation, including polyvagal theory, interoception, neuroception and social engagement as applied to expressive arts therapy and trauma-informed practice; and 4 a variety of expressive arts therapy strategies for application in psychotherapy and counseling.
Introduction to Expressive Arts Therapy-- This course provides an overview and foundation for understanding the theory and practice of expressive arts therapy in mental health, counseling, psychosocial intervention and overall wellness. It also serves as part of the foundational learning for those accumulating credit hours toward Registered Expressive Arts Therapist credential with the International Expressive Arts Therapy Association.
Learners will complete a series of short written assignments, quizzes, and hands-on activities to learn more about expressive arts therapy, history of the field and the essential concepts involved in applying approaches to counseling, psychotherapy and arts-based facilitation with children, adolescents, and adults. This course is open to mental health and healthcare professions, expressive arts facilitators, and graduate students who want to learn more about expressive arts therapies and creative interventions.
